The steering column is just a piece of exhaust pipe with nylon bushings inserted into each end. It is strong lightweight and economical and you can weld anything you want to it to mount it or weld it in solid to the chassis.
The Universal joint was from a toyota, there was a recall on them so I got a box of them for free. You can get them pretty cheap at the auto wreckers. This is just one way you can do your steering. Notice the angle of the spindle arms, the reason for this is to have the correct Ackerman when turning.
